The imperial capital of the former Austro-Hungarian Empire is best known for elegance, class and esteem. From its royal palaces to its towering cathedrals, the modern-day Austrian capital of Vienna served as a home to many a classical music composer.
Despite the city’s regal connotations, this bourgeois metropolis can be seen and enjoyed on a budget, starting with an authentic cup of Viennese coffee (ranging from $3.15 to $5.50 per cup) at a traditional Viennese kaffeehäuser.
You may be tempted to hop in one of the many horse-drawn carriages you will hear clopping through the city, but the best (and cheapest) way to see the city is on foot. Create your own walking tour by strolling through the scenic gardens surrounding Hofburg Palace. Statues, flower beds and extensive acreage of green landscapes maintain Vienna’s regal reputation.
If you’re in the mood to browse, head southwest to Naschmarkt where stalls upon stalls feature Vienna’s freshest fruits, vegetables, meats and more. Pick up a few items and head to Wolksgarten for an afternoon picnic lunch and people watching. Don’t forget to stop for quick (and free!) samples of Austrian wine or sturm at one of the many booths.
In the afternoon, continue your self-guided pedestrian tour toward Rathaus where you can take a free, guided tour through the whimsical Gothic-style city hall building. A tasty bratwurst from one of the many street stands you will see (and smell) in Vienna will set you back between $3–4.
Rest your feet after a day of walking by dining at Esterhazykeller, a charming Austrian restaurant with classic dishes like apple strudel ($4.40) and wiener schnitzel ($12).
When night falls, dress in your finest and head to the opera at Staatsoper where you can snag last-minute standing-room tickets for only $4.50.
