Honeymoons

Picture a typical honeymoon destination. There are probably palm trees, white-sand beaches and a gorgeous sunset, right? While a tropical honeymoon definitely has its perks, a trip to a place with a wintry setting can be dreamy and magical. After a day of skiing, sitting by a fire and sipping wine with your better half sounds perfectly romantic. So bundle up and get inspired by these nine snowy honeymoon destinations.

Lake Louise, Canada

Overlook the bluest, crispest lake you’ve ever seen and take in majestic snowy mountains at The Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise. More like a castle than a luxury hotel, the area boasts the best in winter activities — skiing, snowboarding, snowshoeing, ice-skating and much more. And best of all, you can go from hitting the slopes to relaxing at the hotel’s amazing spa. Did someone say, “Couples Massage?”

Jukkasjärvi, Sweden

Sweden is a land filled with beautiful scenery, and it looks even better covered in snow. One of its most famous (and unique) hotels is ICEHOTEL. Yes, it is indeed a hotel made of ice. Stay in a luxurious igloo or choose one of the “warm rooms,” which resemble rooms you may be more used to staying in. Go on a dogsled tour, take an ice-sculpting class and, at night, watch the breathtaking northern lights.

Vail, Colorado

Vail is the Holy Grail for die-hard skiers and snowboarders. If you and your new spouse would rather ski down a mountain together than have a candlelight dinner, The Arrabelle at Vail Square is right up your alley. If the world-class ski hills start to tire you out, you can go on a sleigh ride together or shop the boutiques.

Verbier, Switzerland

In the quaint countryside of Switzerland, you may be surprised to find a 4-star resort. La Cordée des Alpes is nestled in the heart of the Alps. Feel as if you’ve stepped back in time with nods to traditional Swiss design and watch skiers glide down the mountain. And be sure to enjoy some Swiss comfort food at the hotel restaurant. Fondue, anyone?

Tromsø, Norway

There is only one word for this Norwegian city — charming. And just imagine it covered in Christmas lights and freshly fallen snow. Stay at the Clarion Collection Hotel With and take in views of the snow-capped mountains that preside over the local harbor. After a day of sightseeing, come back to the hotel to sit in the steam room and get cozy in a hotel room that is the epitome of Scandinavian décor.

Whistler, Canada

Whistler is another location on many a skier’s must-do list. Live out your winter fantasy in a mountain lodge that overlooks a sweeping mountain range at the First Tracks Lodge. If you’re not a skier, plenty of other winter activities abound, such as ziplining through snowy trees, tubing and tobogganing. Up for some good-natured newlywed competition? Play a little ice hockey at the rink. Loser buys the hot chocolate.

Lech am Arlberg, Austria

The Gotthard Hotel in Austria might offer some of the world’s most outstanding views of snow-covered mountains. There is skiing, of course, but some of the best activities are offered around Christmas. Eat at a Christmas buffet, walk around a beautifully decorated village and enjoy traditional holiday treats at the hotel bakery.

Girdwood, Alaska

You have presumably never heard of Girdwood, Alaska, which makes this destination perfect for those who want to enjoy some wintry peace and quiet. The Alyeska Resort is just the place to do that. After a wedding jam-packed with activities, escape to a resort that offers an aerial tram to take in views, cross-country skiing trails and even yoga classes. Say, “Ahhh…” and just relax.

Ilulissat, Greenland

Believe it or not, you can stay at a hotel in Greenland. No more a remote, forgotten isle, stay at the Hotel Arctic and vacation in a place few have visited. Tour the fjords, stay in a modern version of an igloo and eat at the hotel’s amazing restaurants. How’s that for a one-of-a-kind honeymoon experience?
