Edinburgh’s fairly compact size makes it possible to see the highlights in 24 hours, although the enchanting capital of Scotland warrants much more time. But if you’re only able to fit in one day of sightseeing, here’s what you shouldn’t miss.
Start your day with a sunrise climb to the top of Arthur’s Seat. It’s a fairly arduous climb and the paths can be muddy after heavy rains, but the 360-degree views from the top of Edinburgh’s highest point are worth every step. Scale down the other side of the hill and stroll around the university grounds, ending up in the Meadows, a lush green area of parks, walking paths, cafés and people-watching posts.
Next head north toward the Old Town for a stroll down the Royal Mile, the most famous street in town full of whisky shops, pubs, souvenir stalls and men playing bagpipes for tips. The west end of the road leads straight up to Edinburgh Castle where you can learn more about Scottish history and enjoy views from a different perspective.
The day should culminate at one of the unique watering holes in the New Town, such as The Standing Order or The Dome, both former banks transformed into pubs where a whisky tasting is in order with a side of fish and chips and mesmerizing architecture.
