Everyone goes to Louisville or Lexington when they visit the Bluegrass State. Spread your explorations a little further with a stop in one of these three destinations.
Bardstown
Bardstown is a popular stop on the Kentucky Bourbon Trail, but don’t just stop in for the whiskey. The second-oldest city in the state and the Bourbon Capital of the World has a lot more to offer. If you’re particularly interested in history, try a stop by My Old Kentucky Home, completed in 1818 as part of a 1,300-acre plantation. For a historic overnight stay, try Talbott Tavern for drinks, eats and stays in a 1700s setting.
Frankfort
While Frankfort is the state’s capital, it doesn’t get as much attention as it should. Stop in and explore with visits to Leslie Morris Park, which offers two Civil War sites, an interpretive center and hiking trails with guided tours nearly every day; and Old Governor’s Mansion, built in the late 1700s.
Owensboro
Music lovers will want to visit Owensboro, known as the home of bluegrass music. Visit Bluegrass Music Hall of Fame and Museum to see what all the hype is about, then grab dinner in the historic downtown district, where Miller House Restaurant has long been a fan favorite, with its bourbon-focused bar and early 1900s home setting.
