Cat lovers rejoice. Instead of grabbing your morning brew at just any coffee shop, you can imbibe on your favorite beverages at a cat café. Like the name implies, cat cafés feature kitties who nap, play and visit with lucky guests.
Many are connected to non-profits and animal rescue organizations or offer adoptions. If you want to experience a cat café for yourself, here are five places to start.
Brooklyn Cat Cafe
As the only non-profit cat café in New York, the Brooklyn Cat Cafe offers cat adoption and social space run by Brooklyn Bridge Animal Welfare Coalition. Remember that, according to the cat café rules, “cats are cats, and we cannot control everything they do.” Grab a cup of coffee and don’t expect these kitties to act differently than any other cat.
Cats Republic
Enter the Republic of Cats in St. Petersburg, Russia, and order a cup of CATuccino, as well as cat-themed treats suitable for humans. There are also workshops on making cat toys, cat cakes and how to care for your cat properly.
Le Café des Chats
Like most cafés in Paris, Le Café des Chats takes its craft seriously, from Bouchette to the desserts. There just happens to be a handful of felines hanging around, too. The cats roam around and aren’t shy about looking through your bag or curling up on your lap while you sip cappuccinos. Or they may decide to snub you and lounge high on their wall perches, ignoring your catcalls.
Neko no Jikan
As Japan’s first cat café, Neko no Jikan features a traditional Japanese space with shoji screens and serene decor. Soft music plays as cats curl up and nap or come by to visit for a little playtime.
Cat Café Macskakávézó
A must for cat lovers, the Cat Café Macskakávézó in Budapest is home to more than a dozen rescue cats, including Maine Coons and mixed breeds. Families should know children can visit 10 a.m.–6 p.m. weekdays, but weekends restrict ages to 8 years on up.
Before you head out to a cat café, make reservations in advance. Most limit their seating to avoid overwhelming the cats. A fee is also the norm and usually helps support a local animal charity so you can give back while you enjoy a cup of coffee with a furry friend. J
