6 Eco-Friendly Resorts Honoring Earth Day Every Day

While Earth Day is a day to celebrate our planet, it’s important to respect and honor Earth every day. That’s just what these six resorts do, putting sustainability first year-round.

The Twin Fin Hotel

Located in Oahu, Hawai’i, The Twin Fin Hotel takes sustainability to a new level with the help of Hawaiian actor and ocean activist, Jason Momoa. Momoa recently relaunched a sustainable aluminum-bottled water brand, Mananalu Powered by Boomerang Water, and the hotel is the first to integrate this product . The relaunch features a machine offering a more sustainable way to bottle water. The machine is about the size of a hotel ice maker and can sanitize, rinse, fill and cap up to about 500 aluminum or glass bottles every hour. Once done, bottles are returned to the same machine to go through the process again. This addition helps reduce the brand’s carbon emissions by 95 percent and offers a fully sustainable way to provide water for guests. Additionally, the hotel frequently hosts educational programs, beach clean-ups and sustainability talks. Twin Fin also partners with Parley for Oceans for The Parley Interactive Classroom experience, where guests can learn how to protect oceans while creating art pieces from marine debris found on beaches in Hawai’i.

With the help of the Hawaiian Legacy Reforestation Initiative, ‘Alohilani Resort planted more than 26,000 native trees, and commits to plant 100,000 in the coming years to help rehabilitate a native ecosystem and revive endangered species. Guests are welcome to visit HLRI’s forest for a tour and even plant their own trees.

Ibiza Gran Hotel

Guests at Ibiza Gran Hotel can participate in private guest experiences, including a dive with National Geographic marine expert and photographer Mannu San Félix, where they’ll learn the importance of preserving Posidonia, a sea grass known as the lungs of the sea. The reef is considered the world’s oldest organism, providing oxygen while helping support a biodiverse marine community. Ibiza Gran Hotel also uses solar panels to cut CO2 emissions by hundreds of tons every year, as well as the implementation of a glass refill water bottle program to lower plastic use.

Zafiro Palace Andratx in Mallorca, Spain, offers guests the chance to book a llaut boat excursion but with a sustainable twist. These traditional boats of the Balearic Islands run on a 100-percent electric motor, producing no emissions, no carbon footprint and no harm to local marine wildlife. Guests can also explore the nearby coastline and beaches using complimentary electric scooters.

Oil Nut Bay

Guests at Oil Nut Bay can participate in a turtle tagging adventure. This activity contributes to local marine conservation endeavors and gives guests a rare opportunity to work alongside onboard researchers and develop lasting environmental consciousness. On this half-day excursion, participants also learn about the turtle’s evolution and life cycle before setting off in the waters to catch turtles, take measurements and tag them before safely setting them on their way.

Royal Lahaina Resort & Bungalows recently partnered with Treecovery Hawai’i, a nonprofit organization to help restore forests after wildfires. The resort has a Treecovery grow hub, where seedlings live and are tended to until they can be planted on burned properties to help restore the landscape. Royal Lahaina Resort & Bungalows also received a silver certification for Reef Friendly Landscaping Program from Maui Nui Marine Resource Council, a nonprofit advocating for healthier oceans and for committing to eliminate chemicals that negatively impact coral reefs and local ecosystems.
