A new hotel museum hopes to introduce travelers to unique Tibetan art once it opens this month. The Songster Tibetan Art Museum is set to debut at Songtsam Linka Retreat Shangri-La boutique luxury hotel in Tibet. The hotel’s founder and a former documentarian, Biama Duoji aims to connect visitors with Tibetan culture through not just art, but also cultural artifacts and antiquities.
The museum will open to the public as well as hotel guests, covering nearly 3,000 square feet of gallery space split over two floors. The first floor shows the hotel founder’s personal collection, while the second floor is dedicated to artwork. Of particular significance will be the museum’s collection of thangkas, or religious scroll paintings. The paintings — which often depict Buddha statues on satin — have been a part of Tibetan culture for nearly two millennia.
“The vision … was to hope that guests from afar could learn more about this land through Songtsam. Songtsam Museum is also one of the ways for people to understand this land. Only when people are in close contact with this land, can people truly appreciate the power they nurture with[in] their lives, when they think about and pursue beauty,” said Duoji.
