Whatever kind of adventure you are into, southern Italy is a great spot for thrillseekers.

Most visitors to the Amalfi Coast, between Sorrento and Salerno, drive or sail around. However, there are also some great hiking trails to explore, as well as some easy kayaking routes, which will give you a different perspective on one of southern Italy’s most emblematic sites.

If you reach the deep south of the country, head to the town of Basilicata. Here you will find a zipwire that reaches speeds of up to 80 mph, as well as trekking in the Parco della Murgia Materana near the town of Matera.

Get on your bike along the southern coast of Sicily and you will get to see some of the best beaches on the island, as well as important archaeological sites such as the Valley of the Temples at Agrigento. Avoid the height of summer when the temperatures are too high for doing much more than lazing around.

Keen white water rafters should check out Lao River Rafting, a company that operates from Papasidero, a village in the Pollino National Park. The company also offers canyoning, paragliding and quad bike rides, so there is something for everyone to enjoy.

Enjoy the Open Road on Your Terms

For most of us, time in the car is “me time.” You can listen to that podcast you’re captivated by, blast that pop song and sing along at the top of your lungs or listen to the next chapter in that biography e-book you’re almost finished. A road trip only amplifies those opportunities. So, next time you’re traveling by road, take the wheel and take control. Opt for a rental car on your next vacation, rather than a rideshare, taxi or public transportation, and enjoy the open road on your own terms.
