Staying in one of the rural farm stays known as agriturismo is a great way to connect with Italian culture when you are in the country.
Most tend to offer a small number of rooms and a personal connection with your host, and Agriturismo Tarantola is the archetype. Nestled in the hills near Camporeale on the island of Sicily, the farm is less than two hours’ drive from Palermo airport.
After an easy transfer, you will be greeted by a small and incredibly friendly team dedicated to making your stay as memorable as possible. Filippo is the owner, an aristocrat who forged a successful career as a jazz pianist before taking over the land when his father died. Since then he has made Tarantola’s winery operation completely organic, building a strong reputation for innovation and quality.
One activity you can enjoy during your stay is a wine tasting with Filippo himself, who will sit and talk you through the history of the vineyard and his plans for its future while you sip on some of his proudest creations. It’s a great opportunity to sit and chat with a man who has evidently had a fascinating life, and continues to stretch his creativity.
The rooms are functional rather than grand, but that’s far from the main reason to stay here. Chief among them is the view from the top of the hill behind the farmhouse, looking down over the vineyards and the land beyond. Second the incredible food served by chef Saverio, who will impart his knowledge at a cooking class if you so desire. Third, the welcome offered by a team proud to show off their work to guests, but would probably continue working to their passions in the same way even if no one were around.
