History buffs, sailing aficionados and those looking for a fun time on the water this summer should attend the Tall Ships Erie 2019 festival, Aug. 22–25.
One of this year’s big features? Canada’s largest sailing tall ship, the Empire Sandy, at 203 feet long and 740 tons, will make an appearance on Lake Erie. It can hold 300 passengers and crew members combined. The ship was built in 1943, originally a tugboat meant to recover damaged merchant ships following WWII battles. After World War II, the ship went on to sail the North Atlantic Ocean, Mediterranean Sea and Indian Ocean.
The festival overall features more than a dozen tall ships attendees can board, explore and even sail. One unique item you’ll spot on the water is the world’s largest rubber duck, the same six-story, 11-ton yellow duck spotted in numerous international locales over the last few years.
Other than the sailing-related activities, attendees will enjoy live music and other entertainment, a marketplace, food vendors and a beer garden. Children’s activities are also available for visiting families.
Admission tickets start at $10 and day sail tickets, which include a 90-minute sailing experience aboard one of the majestic vessels in attendance, start at $50. The festival grounds open at 10 a.m. Friday through Sunday. The Parade of Sail takes place Thursday evening, 4–6 p.m. Parking will be somewhat limited, so plan ahead. While you’re in the area, also consider visiting the Erie Maritime Museum!
