Bahia Principe Hotels & Resorts recently announced its new show Xaymaca, an original production taking travelers through Jamaica’s rich history and musical evolution. The show made its debut on Dec. 4 at both Bahia Principe Jamaica properties.
The show is directed by Alejandro Alonso, Artistic and Creative Director of Bahia Principe Hotels & Resort, and it highlights Jamaica’s cultural history through music and dance. It reflects the island’s rhythms like Mento, Calypso, Ska and Dancehall, providing guests with the ultimate opportunity to connect with Jamaica’s musical heritage.
“We’re thrilled to introduce ‘Xaymaca’, an immersive journey through Jamaica’s rich history and musical evolution,” said Alonso. “Through captivating performances that celebrate iconic Jamaican rhythms, and with the addition of Nayam, our new restaurant showcasing local flavors, we’re excited to offer our guests an authentic experience that brings the spirit of Jamaica to life.”
The show is split into four acts, each focusing on different periods of Jamaican culture and history:
- Act 1: Arahuacos and the Spirit of the Bird Man: This act introduces the Arawak people, Jamaica’s early inhabitants, and the Bird Man, a figure symbolizing freedom and wisdom.
- Act 2: Puerto Real and Nanny of the Maroons: Learn the story of Puerto Real, a pirate hub, as well as sNanny of the Maroons, a leader who fought for the freedom of her people.
- Act 3: Afro-Caribbean Rhythms and Urban Expression: Explore the music genres of Mento, Calypso and Ska, as well as the influence of Dancehall.
- Act 4: Redemption Song and Jamaica: This last act features the “Redemption Song” and celebrates the unity and cultural diversity of Jamaica.
