One of the most common types of fishing is for Largemouth bass. These fish seem ubiquitous in North America, making them perfect for anglers of all skill levels.

To get started bass fishing, it is best to plan for early- and mid-summer outings. When water gets cold in the winter months, bass go into a type of hibernation mode. They don’t feed or move much for the majority of the winter, making fishing efforts futile.

Once late June rolls around, you can get started in earnest. In terms of equipment, you will need a fishing rod and reel, fishing line and some type of bait or lures. For the most part, a starter set will get you started. Once you become more familiar with the standard open-faced reel, you can begin to look into fine-tuning your tools. When it comes to bass fishing, where you are fishing is just as important as your equipment.

Once you scope out the lake, decide whether you are going out on a boat or if you want to fish on the shore. Ideally, you will be looking for similar environments no matter how you access the water. Look for underwater structures like logs, grass or other types of hiding places. If you are using bait, it might be enough to place your line near the hiding spots. If the bass is hungry and sees the bait, you can bet he will go for it.

Using lures is a little tougher, because the angler needs to manipulate the bait manually. Similar to bait, place the lure near a hiding place and make it seem alive. This is different for all kinds of baits and lures, so experiment to see what works.

Finally, enjoy the time outside among pleasant weather. If one type of bait doesn’t work, try another or move your spot. With enough determination, you are sure to get a bass before too long.
