In today’s world of constant distractions (i.e., cell phones and social media), it’s hard to completely unplug from daily life in order to recharge and fully enjoy a vacation. However, a company called Bedside Reading introduced a program to encourage travelers to switch off their phones and, instead, pick up a book.
Bedside Reading collaborates with publishers and authors to get their books on nightstands in luxury and lifestyle hotels around the country. Travelers who stay in select properties will notice a selection of books in their room that they can read during their stay, or, if they’ve started a book and want to finish it, they can purchase it and take it home with them.
The founder of Bedside Reading — Jane Ubell-Meyer — doesn’t just ship any books to any property; she works directly with the property to determine the types of guests that typically stay there and curates a list of titles those guests might enjoy reading. The hotel has the final say in choosing which books to offer guests.
Guests at these properties can also listen to author podcasts using guestroom TVs or iPads, and some of the hotels part of the program also host author events and virtual book clubs.
Currently, the Bedside Reading program is available in 28 luxury and lifestyle vacation properties in Boston, Chicago, New York and West Hollywood, among other locations.
