Berlin’s Pyronale

Do you like fireworks? If you do, then you may have to check out Germany’s ultimate celebration of pyro-technics. European countries are known for their love of fireworks on New Year’s Eve, or any anniversary celebration, in fact. Fireworks are more accepted as a casual pastime in Europe than they are in the United States. That said, there is nothing like the unbridled celebration that is the Berlin Pyronale.

Each year, Berlin hosts a fireworks competition in which teams from across Europe compete over the course of two days for the chance to win the title of most awe-inspiring display of fiery jubilation. Who decides? Well, the audience. It is a truly interactive experience. Crowds gather outside of the Olympic stadium in Western Berlin to enjoy and vote on that year’s offerings. In addition to the audience, a jury of experts and local celebrities vote on the winner. The competition is not easy. Each team has to prepare three firework displays. Two obligatory displays are determined by the official jury and include one with music and one without. There is also a requirement for the colors used, which vary from year to year.

Additionally, teams must prepare a freestyle program that allows their creative inspiration to run wild. The Pyronale for 2019 has already been scheduled for Aug. 30–31 and you can buy tickets now. It will cost €27 for standing room and €47 for a seat.
