New Orleans is a celebrated city for blues music. Some historians claim that without the surge of blues musicians and music originating from New Orleans, the genre wouldn’t have become so popular. Today, travelers still visit the city just to enjoy the music. The blues bars in New Orleans are some of the best in the world and promise to deliver great music and a great atmosphere to anyone who visits.

The Maple Leaf Bar is one of the best in the city. It’s a great venue to see live blues and jazz music performed. It’s both a bar and music venue, so travelers can sip on their cocktails while nodding along to the music. One of its popular bands, Rebirth Brass Band, plays on a regular schedule every Tuesday night. It’s located on New Orleans’ well-known Bourbon Street.

A popular tourist spot, again located on Bourbon Street, is The Funky Pirate Blues Club. It’s a dive bar that hosts blues shows. Visitors to this bar should be ready for a night on the town versus the stereotypical idea of calm blues performances. A popular performer at this location is Big Al Carson who makes coming to the bar worthwhile.

For an authentic New Orleans blues bar, step off Bourbon Street and head to Orleans Avenue. This street is home to the Ooh Poo Pah Doo Bar. The music at this venue varies between all the genres New Orleans is known for: blues, soul, funk and jazz. The drinks are cheap but buy them while you can because the bartenders frequently leave the bar to do some dancing themselves.
