The sheer size of the Japanese capital can make it an intimidating place for first-time visitors. With this guide to the most interesting neighborhoods, you can work out exactly where you want to spend your time.
Shinjuku is one of the most famous areas for visitors, with lots of bars and restaurants. Check out the Golden Gai quarter, where Japanese businessmen congregate to drink in tiny bars, or the Kabukicho quarter, home to gaudy clubs and restaurants as well as some seedier red light establishments.
Shibuya is known as the youth culture hub in the city, with lots of shops to explore along Center Gai, the main street. Next up is Akihabara, the center for technology and gaming culture where you will find lots of anime stores, and Harajuku, where alternative fashion is the calling card. The people watching is great here, as counterculture characters flock to the area to see and be seen.
If you want to see the flashier side of Tokyo, head to upmarket Ginza. Time your Tokyo visit for cherry blossom season and you will want to head to Ueno, home to a number of great spots to see the pink blossoms.
