Outforia, an online resource for all things outdoors, recently conducted a study to determine the best states for adrenaline seekers. Outforia ranked each state on the number of available activities in 10 categories to put together the 2021 Adventure Index.
The 10 categories examined were rock climbing routes, hiking trails, mountain biking trails, kayaking spots, ski resorts, zip lines, surfing spots, caving grottos, skydiving drop zones and hang gliding locations. Based on the research, the top 10 adventure destinations in 2021 are:
- California
- Colorado
- New York
- Pennsylvania
- Virginia
- North Carolina
- Wisconsin
- Michigan
- Florida
- Texas
California was the clear No. 1, with more than 45,000 adventure activities across 10 different categories. The state offers more options for rock climbing, surfing, hiking, skydiving and hang gliding than any other state. The California landscape allows for all kinds of adventures.
Colorado is well-known worldwide for skiing, boasting 32 ski resorts. The state also boasts plenty of other outdoor activities, with more mountain biking tracks than any other state. And there’s also the Rocky Mountains, with loads of hiking and climbing options.
No. 3 New York scored high for both ski resorts and kayaking destinations — which can be found around the state, from upstate to the rivers surrounding Manhattan.
