Tips / Destination

While London offers a myriad of cultural experiences, landmarks and destinations, some of the best ways to truly experience English culture and history is to venture outside the city limits to the surrounding towns, charming and storied countryside villages, manor houses and beaches. Here are some of the top weekend getaway destinations from London.

Brighton

The vibrant city of Brighton is only a 60-minute train ride from London and only 30 minutes from Gatwick Airport (LGW). Visit Hove beach, famous for its colorful huts, Regency architecture and Rottingdean, a picturesque English village. Enjoy great shopping at Brighton Pier and see the stunning Royal Pavilion. Brighton is also home to some of the best fish and chips in the country.

Bath

Bath is a truly unique destination, ideal for wellness-focused travelers. The beautiful city was named a UNESCO World Heritage site, offering the only natural hot springs in the UK and original Roman Baths. The city boasts stunning Georgian architecture, iconic attractions such as Stonehenge and Longleat Safari Park, great shopping and renowned dining.

Manchester

Dubbed the original modern city and birthplace of the Industrial Revolution, Manchester offers a refreshing blend of old and new with world-class dining and shopping along with picturesque Victorian architecture and rich history. Catch a Manchester United game, take a walk around Hollingworth Lake and Heaton Park or visit the world-famous Museum of Science and Industry.

York

The stunning walled city of York makes for the perfect daytrip from London. The city, founded by the ancient Romans, boasts colossal 13th-century Gothic cathedrals, medieval architecture and numerous historic museums and exhibits. York is also a romantic destination, with quaint cobblestone streets and fantastic cafés and restaurants along the River Ouse.

Sussex

Sussex is a rural county in southeast England best known for its English Channel seaside resorts, Gravetye Manor, King George IV’s opulent Royal Pavilion palace and the Gothic Arundel Castle. Sussex can be easily reached from London via train in 50 minutes.
