Flooded trees in the Amazon Rainforest close to Santarem, Brazil

Tips / Destination

South America is home to some of the world’s most unique and fascinating wildlife. Between the mountains of Patagonia and the stunning paradise islands, there’s no shortage of adventures to be had.

Manu National Park is regularly touted as one of the top national parks on Earth. The 3.7 million-acre biosphere is location in the Peruvian Amazon and houses more than 15,000 species of plants and 1,000 species of birds. In fact, it holds the records for most bird species seen in one day. It also boasts giant otters, pumas, jaguars, sloths and Black Caimans.

Brazil’s Pantanal is the world’s largest freshwater wetland system and home to thousands of unique wildlife species. Tourists frequent the region because its fauna and landscape is similar to the Amazon, but the lower amount of foliage makes it easer to spot the animals. It’s also home to the largest jaguar population in the world.

Penguin lovers will appreciate a tour of Puerto Tumbo in Argentina. During half of the year, September to March, roughly 500,000 Magellan Penguins come to the shores to breed and give birth. The park and nearby city of Puerto Madryn see shorelines covered in the majestic birds and guests are able to get within feet of them. The park is also home to foxes, orcas, dolphins and southern whales.

Of course, it’s not a complete trip to South America without a tour of the famous Galapagos Islands. Ecaudor’s beloved chain of islands is home to numerous tourist companies, each of which will take you from shore to shore as you spot incredible wildlife like flamingoes, iguanas, giant sea tortoises and more.

Taking It Back to Basics at Ghent’s Gruut Brewery

Breweries are everywhere today and, while many craft and microbreweries specialize in particular styles of beer, few are quite as specialized as Ghent Gruut Brewery in Ghent, Belgium. Here, the current craze for hop-heavy India Pale Ales is entirely eschewed as absolutely no hops at all are used in the brewing process. Before you clamor to claim this can’t be beer at all as everyone knows the four ingredients of beer are grain, water, yeast, and hops, consider hops weren’t actually added to beer until the 13th century. Before then, all beers were flavored with herbs and spices, or gruut, as the French population of medieval Ghent called them.

Leave Troublesome Rideshare Worries Behind

We can see it now and remember when it happened to us: Watching as the black car icon loops around and around, seemingly endlessly, and our wait time on the rideshare app continually changes. Long wait times and confused drivers are just a few bothersome issues that can nag at rideshare users. Need a solution? Ditch rideshares altogether in favor of renting a car on your next trip.
