Students interested in underwater conservation and research are encouraged to explore the opportunity to swim with the sharks through Broadreach. The Fiji Shark Studies program is a three-week course that offers credit to college students looking to dive with some of Earth’s most fascinating creatures.
Broadreach offers three college credits to students enrolled in university, along with four certifications and eight community service hours for students still in high school. Students will spend the summer studying shark physiology, habitats, conservation and myths that follow these ferocious sea creatures. They’ll have the opportunity to experience at least 24 dives and conduct research projects.
The program also offers an excellent opportunity to learn about Fijian culture and its relation to sharks. Students will receive cultural immersion in a Fijian village while also exploring the Luva River, the lifeblood of the region. They’ll also get firsthand experience in conservation by working with the Shark Reef Marine Reserve on numerous projects that improve the lives of the local shark population and Fiji natives.
The cost of the program is $7,280 per student and that covers the cost of tuition, food, accommodations and excursions taken during your trip. It does not cover the cost of airfare or optional expenses during the course. Check out the website for available dates and more information on the full range of activities you can expect.
