China has a reputation for being a pricey place to travel, but Guilin might be an exception to the rule. The city is full of delicious eats you can taste on a budget.

Xiaonanguo on Wenming Road is a local favorite frequented by Guilin residents more than tourists, so you know it’s good. The large hall restaurant is basically family-style dining, so don’t be afraid to rub shoulders with your neighbors. The food here is spectacular and offers every Guilin specialty in one spot.

Beijing Han Li Xuan Barbecue Buffet offers a truly unique way to dine out, but don’t expect to have anything served to you here. In fact, you’ll do the cooking yourself. The restaurant provides the ingredients, but it’s up to you to decide how to use them. You’ll be seated in front of your own grill, and told to go to town.

Rosemary Café is a bit of a tourist trap at this point, but it has more than earned its reputation as a fantastic place to eat. The wall is adorned with photos and messages from previous diners who enjoyed their visit, and after you get a taste of the rosemary pizza you’ll probably add your praises to the list.

Tong Lai Guan is another spot where you can find great, authentic Chinese at an affordable price. Though the fried shrimp and pepper chicken are both excellent options, you can also try a hot pot here if you’re feeling adventurous. The atmosphere is causal and upbeat, and it’s a great spot to mingle with locals and expats.
