Traveling to the Southern Hemisphere in winter is a great way to escape the heat of summer up north. You may not be able to hit as many beaches, but if you stick to cities and mountains, it can be the perfect vacation nonetheless. Buenos Aires is beautiful and seeing the city during winter holds a lot of appeal. The bulk of winter falls from June to August in this region with highs reaching the mid 60s and lows in the mid 40s. This is perfect sweater weather. You won’t be traveling in the peak season so you should be able to get cheaper airfares, particularly in June when fares can be as low as $750 round-trip.
Besides walking the beautiful streets of Buenos Aires, you can embrace the cold and enjoy your favorite wintry activities in a pretty moderate climate. Visit any number of museums, like the Museum of Latin American Art, which focuses on artists of Latin America in the 20th century. Or the smaller and pretty house museum of Eduardo Sivori contains 4,200 pieces of fine art from the early 20th century.
It is also not widely known that Buenos Aires contains more bookstores per capita than any other city in the world, so check out the El Ateneo Grand Splendid located at Av. Santa Fe 1860, 1123 CABA. First opened in 1918, it is purported to be one of the most beautiful bookstores in the world. For a wider English selection, try Walrus books at Estados Unidos 617, C1101AAM.
There are winter festivals taking place in the month of July as well, particularly the Caminos y Sabores food fair, which offers an opportunity to sample foods from all over Argentina without leaving the city.
It may go without saying, but don’t forget to drink red wine and, if you are so inclined, sample some of the best red meat on the planet. You won’t regret it.
