Celebrate California Poppy Day

Each year, April 6 is California Poppy Day. These breathtaking flowers overtake the rolling California foothills every spring and bring visitors from all over the world. While this didn’t happen this year due to the pandemic, here are some ways to celebrate next year.

Take a drive through the foothills. These golden flowers are just as beautiful from a distance as they are up close. In fact, the state had issues with visitors trampling the flowers in recent years, so a drive by is the perfect way to view them while respecting nature.

If you can’t get to California, plant your own. Poppies thrive in drier climates, but can bloom in most places in the United States. You’ll find packets of them at your local floral center and they can liven up any home garden or yard. Caring for them is pretty simple as long as you’ve got a little water to spare.

California Poppy Day is meant to be an educational holiday above all else. Take the opportunity to teach those around you about the importance of poppies, and all flowers, to our environment. There are numerous resources online where you can learn why they’re so vital to the local ecosystem and how you can encourage others to help protect them.
