Tips / Travel

November marks the observance of National Aviation Month. The month-long celebration is dedicated to recognizing the contributions and achievements of the United States in the development of aviation. Take this opportunity to learn more about the history of aviation and celebrate great achievements.

The United States is home to dozens of aviation museums, with some states boasting multiple dedicated aviation museums. The Smithsonian’s National Air and Space Museum in Washington, D.C., holds the largest collection of aircraft and spacecraft in the world. The San Diego Air and Space Museum houses many unique exhibits including a model of the first hot-air balloon. The United States Army Aviation Museum in Alabama houses the largest collection of helicopters in the world. Seattle’s spacious Museum of Flight features the original Boeing production plant.

Next, schedule a tour of the current Boeing factory, north of Seattle. Available daily, tours cover the production line of Boeing aircraft. Search for the museum closest to you and plan a daytrip or long weekend to explore the museum.

Watch films themed around aviation like Top Gun, The Aviator or independent documentary One Six Right. For a more in-depth experience, read fiction (The Right Stuff) or non-fiction (The Wright Brothers) books about aviation. Sign up to receive emails from the National Aviation Hall of Fame to learn more about famous aviators.

How to Explore Neuschwanstein Castle

Most people know Neuschwanstein Castle as Walt Disney’s inspiration for both Cinderella’s and Sleeping Beauty’s castles, but it is also filled with history and stories from German royalty. In 1868, King Ludwig II began construction of the medieval-style castle to live in. Sadly, it wasn’t finished before he died, so the king never got to see the finished product. Today, the castle is privately owned, but travelers can still explore it on a guided audio tour.
