The National Park Service created its National Trails System in 1968 to establish trails in a variety of settings for all to enjoy. There are four different types of trails: national scenic trails, national historic trails, national recreation trails and side and connecting trails. Search the website for recommendations of trails throughout the country.
Upgrade Your Gear
Take this opportunity to invest in new hiking gear. Purchase new hiking shoes, outerwear, backpacks or other items from stores like REI, Columbia or Patagonia.

You’ll need to fuel up if you intend to go on a strenuous hike. Take this opportunity to try new recipes for hiking-friendly snacks like granola, trail mix, roasted nuts and protein bars.

There are safety concerns from injuries to animal encounters while hiking. Make sure you are prepared in the event of an emergency. Stock up your first aid kit and read about potential dangers in the area of your planned hike.
