While French, Italian and Spanish food is renowned the world over, Central European cuisine gets much less attention.
Definitions of Central Europe vary, but always include Germany, Austria, Hungary, Slovakia, the Czech Republic and Poland. Many of these national cuisines are quite similar, but tend to vary from region to region due to differences in climate.
Some of the most famous dishes include Austrian Wiener schnitzel, a breaded escalope and Slovak kapustnica, a soup of sausage and sauerkraut. In Poland, you’ll find dumplings known as pierogi and oscypek, sheep’s cheese often served grilled.
Germany is famous for its sausages, like currywurst, a popular street snack, and bratwurst, ubiquitous throughout the land. For dessert, there’s Black Forest gateau and stollen, a kind of fruitcake.
You may have heard of goulash, a delicious stew great on cold winter nights, in Hungary and the Czech Republic.
In many places you’ll come across hearty dishes heavy on potatoes and starch with plenty of meat to boot. It’s good, honest cooking without the bells and whistles you might associate with other cuisines.
If you find yourself in Central Europe, make sure to fill up on some of the traditional foods. You won’t regret it.
