At 3,776 meters, Mount Fuji is the tallest mountain in Japan. Visitors climb its slopes between July and September, during the official climbing season. At this time the weather is mild and local amenities are in full operation, including mountain huts and public transport.
There are often crowds on Mount Fuji, particularly during Obon Week in mid-August. Visitors are advised to avoid this time, and aim instead for mid-July. This is when things tend to be quieter as school holidays haven’t started yet.
There are 10 stations on the way up the mountain, and a paved road runs all the way to the fifth station. Most people take public transport to this point and then walk, with Fuji Subari Line the easiest station to get to and from Tokyo.
Most people should be able to climb the mountain as there are no technical skills required. You can even get away without hiring a guide, but it’s recommended you do so.
Many visitors ascend to around the eighth station on one day, sleep a few hours and then summit early the next morning to see the sunrise. A one-night stay with two meals should cost around $65.
