Lapland, Finland, is worth a visit for its geographical diversity and natural beauty. Most of Finland is covered by the taiga, an expansive, breathtaking, snow-covered region of forest. Glimpse the Northern Lights in the northernmost region where it hits the Arctic Circle.

They say if you want something done right, you should do it yourself. In this instance, they are probably not referring to Christmas trees, but it cannot hurt to try and chop one down at least once in your life. How hard can it be? It really varies, depending on the situation. There some things to prepare for and tips to remember when cutting down your own Christmas tree.

Make sure to go to a Christmas tree farm. This is important because there are regulations regarding what kind of tree you are allowed to cut down and where. This changes from state to state. Sometimes these farms will provide you with the tools you need to chop down your own tree, like a saw or a rope, but you might also have to bring your own, so call ahead. Definitely make sure to have your own gloves because tree bark is no joke.

Choose a tree that will fit in your house, so maybe bring a tape measure, but also choose a healthy tree. As counterintuitive as this may sound, you don’t want a tree that is dead, even if you are about to kill it. Once you have carefully chopped down your tree, you need to make sure to keep it hydrated, especially within the first 48 hours. This is a delicate time for your tree and can affect its staying power later on. Now, bring your tree home and have a decorating party!
