With varied landscapes in a fairly small country, Portugal is great for cycling trips.
The south of the country is best in winter, spring and autumn, when temperatures are lower and more manageable, while the north of the country is best in summer.
With lots of tourism, the country has great infrastructure for visitors. You’ll be able to find a place to stay wherever you are, and there is lots of information available. Not to mention the food and wine is incredible, too.
Some of the most popular cycling routes include the Ecovia Algarviana, a 300-kilometer route in the south of the country; the EuroVelo1, which runs from the Spanish border to Sagres in the Algarve along 200 kilometers of coastline; and a network of national mountain bike centers where there are trails to explore.
The Douro valley is a popular cycling destination, although the hilly terrain means it’s not for beginners, while the Algarve coastline is flatter and easier to get to grips with.
You can fly in to the country and rent a bike, easy to do, or bring your own gear. Several companies offer guided group trips, too.
