Cycling in Sicily

Cycling is a big deal in Sicily, and there are loads of routes to explore.

Head down to the southeast of the island to explore the area around Mount Etna on two wheels. Starting in Taormina, the Alcantara Chiarello Loop takes in amazing coastline, charming towns and bucolic countryside. At just more than 20 miles, it’s a good length for a leisurely half-day cycle.

Set off from Cefalu and you can ride 33 miles along the Sicilia Dag 7, which takes riders into the mountains. You’ll be climbing 2,850 feet, so it’s best for experienced cyclists, but it’s worth every minute if you are confident in your abilities.

For a more relaxed ride, take on the coastal path from Trapani to Marsala. It’s largely flat, with great views out to sea, and you will cycle past some incredible salt beds that make for great photos.

Syracuse is also a good spot for cyclists, with many loop routes starting and ending in the middle of town. The Ortigia loop goes along the coast to Avola before climbing up into the mountains to a height of some 2,900 feet before descending back to Syracuse itself. At 53 miles you will need some road cycling experience to tackle this one in a day.
