This tiny little deli-cum-café is something of a favorite with locals, and it’s not hard to see why.
Tucked away down an alley off the main pedestrianized shopping street, Daje feels like a hidden secret in Perugia. The menu is small but varied, with different size platters featuring a variety of local products. Go for the large one to share between two and you’ll have more than enough food.
The cheese and meats are delicious, served with local bread. It’s all washed down with wine from barrels, which is surprisingly cheap. It’s only €2 for a glass, and it tastes great.
Space is limited inside, and you may well have to wait for a table. Squeezing onto a small wooden seat might not sound like the most comfortable way to eat dinner, but the food is worth it. The atmosphere is lively, with locals stopping in for a quick snack and a glass of wine, and the staff makes everyone feel welcome.
There are many dining options in Perugia, but few of them are as dedicated to locally sourced ingredients as Daje. It’s a great place to get acquainted with delicacies from the region, and well off the tourist trail.
