Trends / Voluntourism

With Costa Rica recently announcing plans to go completely plastic and carbon free, it’s no surprise ecotourism is high on its list of priorities. By encouraging tourists to be mindful when visiting sensitive destinations and leave a smaller carbon footprint wherever they go, Costa Rica hopes to do its part to lessen the impact of tourism on the global ecosystem.

Costa Rica has amazing biodiversity with volcanoes, dense jungles, beautiful beaches and lush rainforests. Thanks to the country’s incredible efforts at conservation, 25 percent of the natural landscape is protected by the country’s National System of Conservation Areas. This incredible preservation effort enables the country to allow visitors to enjoy the natural beauty of Costa Rica while maintaining a level of respect for nature and integrity of the ecosystem.

Many resorts and nature lodges in Costa Rica support ecotourism with Earth-friendly practices, from sustainably farmed foods and products to keeping facilities small with minimal electricity use. Tours and outdoor activities are designed specifically to keep crowds at a minimum and reduce the waste left behind, thus reducing the impact of tourism on the country’s delicate landscapes.

Another way Costa Rica is fostering ecotourism is through education. Nature preserves and tourist attractions offer extensive information to guests regarding nature’s delicate balance and the role tourists have in affecting that balance. As the country continues toward its goal to be a leader in protecting the global ecosystem, it will undoubtedly maintain these practices to protect its natural resources and set an example for other countries.

What to Do During a Trip to Morro Bay, California

No, it’s not Monterey Bay. We’re talking Morro Bay, California, located about a 2.5-hour drive to the south, about halfway between San Jose and Los Angeles. A quieter destination, Morro Bay offers plenty for the outdoor adventurer to enjoy.
