One of the best ways to experience and learn more about a culture is by looking for and picking through the local markets. Depending on the destination, markets can be found in the out-of-the-way nooks and crannies of larger cities or can function as attractions on their own merit.

In Egypt, many of the bigger tourist cities, like Cairo and Alexandria, are home to awe-inspiring markets filled with any number of interesting, beautiful and one-of-a-kind crafts. Stay away from the typical tourist souvenirs and make sure to pick up something unique on your trip.

The types of crafts to look out for depend on the way you plan on transporting your purchases. Hand-blown glass is popular, and you will likely be able to find it at many stalls throughout any given market. These glass pieces range from tiny Christmas ornaments to decorative bottles and more. Take your time and pick a glass you really like.

You will likely come across any number of straw tools, like baskets. These are hand-made tools to add some Egyptian authenticity to your home décor.

Also be on the lookout for different kinds of jewelry and accessories. From shalateen necklaces to shoulder bags to leave-in hair tonic, there are all kinds of accessories on the streets of Egypt’s markets.

Taking It Back to Basics at Ghent’s Gruut Brewery

Breweries are everywhere today and, while many craft and microbreweries specialize in particular styles of beer, few are quite as specialized as Ghent Gruut Brewery in Ghent, Belgium. Here, the current craze for hop-heavy India Pale Ales is entirely eschewed as absolutely no hops at all are used in the brewing process. Before you clamor to claim this can’t be beer at all as everyone knows the four ingredients of beer are grain, water, yeast, and hops, consider hops weren’t actually added to beer until the 13th century. Before then, all beers were flavored with herbs and spices, or gruut, as the French population of medieval Ghent called them.
