You might be under the impression you need to travel far and wide to observe some of the rarest species in the wild. And, although a fair amount of travel is involved, you won’t have to leave the confines of the United States. You will, however, need to travel to its farthest reach, Hawai’i.
According to the National Park Service, Hawai’i’s parks boast the highest concentration of endangered plant and animal species in all of the national parks. The islands of Hawai’i give shelter to many unique forms of wildlife that cannot be found anywhere else on the planet. That is a tall order.
Of course, the mainland United States has endangered species as well; try to see the endangered panther in Florida, the Mississippi gopher frog or Oregon Gray Wolf, as well. The fact remains, however, the most fruitful vacation spot for seeking out some of the most delicate creature in the natural world will be in Hawai’i.
And don’t misinterpret what we mean by delicate. The National Parks Conservation Association claims the Hawai’ian Island of Haleakala on the island of Maui is home to 81 endangered flowering plants and 10 birds, as well as non-flowering plants, insects, mammals and reptiles. Some of these are found at the top of top of volcanoes, like the flowering silversword plant; that’s no precious flower, but it is certainly beautiful. So if you are looking for a destination that boasts beautiful beaches and natural wonder, check out Hawai’i’s national parks.
