If you are planning a trip to Canada, or more specifically, Quebec, it is imperative you scope out a great spot to pick up some poutine.
For the uninitiated, poutine is a traditional Canadian food. Regular French fries are drizzled with cheese curds and gravy to make a delicious mess of a side. If you are in French Canada, there is a good chance you can find a poutine stand, or at the very least, order it from a restaurant.
There is no agreed-upon poutine origin story. The most specific anyone knows for sure is the dish originated somewhere in rural Quebec in the 1950s. According to Cottage Life, the dish originated at a restaurant when a customer asked for cheese curds to be added to their gravy fries. The chef responded in French that the request would make a mess, and the name, and dish, was born.
Originally, poutine was a simple mixture of cheese curds and fries. Poutine didn’t come to mean the full concoction until large chains began selling the whole mixture.
Poutine is such a widely enjoyed food, it is even possible to get vegetarian variants. Many restaurants and chains create the gravy from a mixture, and it is actually vegetarian by default.
When you visit any part of French Canada, make sure to pick up a serving of this delicious treat.
