Trends / Sustainability

With an eye on environmentally friendly travel, travelers don’t always know where to start on their mission to lessen their impact. Instead, travelers want companies to offer solutions they can incorporate into trips. According to Booking.com’s 2019 Sustainable Travel Report, 71 percent of travelers think travel companies should offer consumers more sustainable travel choices. Almost half of the travelers surveyed admitted they find it hard to make sustainable choices on vacation.

Despite criticism for flying private jets and other non-sustainable travel options, Prince Harry helped launch Travalyst to promote more sustainable options. The company launched with Booking.com, Ctrip, Skyscanner, TripAdvisor and Visa as co-founding industry vets.

Other companies have already stepped up to create sustainable options for travelers that go beyond environmental friendliness and toward the impact in the local community. Impact Tours offers trips with a purpose that helps travelers offset their carbon emissions while supporting local social enterprises. Travelers have also up-leveled the concept of slow travel to embrace sustainable solutions. Train travel, taking fewer flights to reduce harmful CO2 emissions and spending money in a local economy for longer all help create a more sustainable impact in the community.

Although travel still has a long way to go to help balance its effect on the environment and local cultures, the industry is waking up to the idea they can do more to lessen the impact.
