The Hollywood Forever Cemetery is one of the oldest cemeteries in Los Angeles. Besides its main purpose, it is also a cultural landmark, hosting numerous special events year-round.
Founded in 1899, the cemetery is the final resting place for many celebrities, including Judy Garland, Cecil B. DeMille, Chris Cornell and Mickey Rooney. In 2002, the cemetery began screening films in a partnership with film organization Cinespia. From May through September, Hollywood Forever hosts viewings of classic films projected on the side of a mausoleum. Attendees bring picnics and blankets to Fairbanks Lawn for the one-of-a-kind experience. Oftentimes, the outdoor screenings feature a pre-show of themed photo booths, DJs and even visits from the film’s stars or filmmakers.
Hollywood Forever is home to a Masonic Lodge that hosts a year-round concert program. The venue opened in 1927. In addition to concerts, it hosts podcast tapings, author talks and other cultural events.
The cemetery also hosts an annual Dia de Los Muertos celebration. Held every year on the last Saturday before Day of the Dead, the cemetery draws more than 40,000 participants for an unforgettable event.
