Explore Art and Natural History at The Royal Alberta Museum

The Royal Alberta Museum is the largest museum in Western Canada. It boasts more than 82,000 square feet of exhibition space featuring collections showcasing contemporary works alongside artifacts dating back to the dinosaurs. It’s a fantastic place to experience the wide-ranging history of Alberta and the surrounding region.

The museum contains more than 2 million objects across 12 curatorial programs. These include archaeology, indigenous studies, military history and earth and life sciences. One of the most interesting exhibitions is the volcano demonstration, where guests are invited to trigger a mini-eruption. There are also numerous interactive displays in each area great for kids and adults alike. You will need to read a bit, and you can expect to spend quite a bit of time on your feet. The short video displays are a great way to take a load off and learn more about the history of the region.

The museum itself is large and houses a children’s gallery and café on site. If there’s one criticism it’s that there seems to be no rhyme or reason to some of the displays — you’re left to your own devices to figure out the proper order to view things. However, there’s enough to keep you busy for a few hours, which makes it more than worth the price of admission.
