is located in the northern part of the Indian subcontinent and part of the larger region of Kashmir. The former Buddhist kingdom is teeming with stunning Tibetan monasteries set amid majestic mountain ranges, and is one of the last Tibetan hamlets inside of the country.

Ladakh was once a small part of the ancient Silk Road and an essential trade route in the region. The largest town is Leh, home to many of the major Buddhist monasteries in Ladakh, including the white monument of Shanti Stupa. The monument sits at just less than 14,000 feet and offers terrific views of the city. It’s also close to Thiskey, Shey and Hemmis monasteries.

Visitors will also want to explore Alchi, a city along the Indus Valley home to the Rizong Monastery. The town is surrounded by snow-capped mountains and offers the best opportunity to experience the quiet life of monks in Ladakh. From there, you’ll likely head to the Nubra Valley. Locals claim the valley houses the world’s highest pass with breathtaking views over the valley floor. It’s also a great place to partake in a camel ride over the sand dunes of Hundar. More adventurous travelers should seek out Zanskar, one of the most remote regions of Ladakh. The isolated area is located in the Himalayas and houses beautiful glaciers and harsh landscape, as it’s the highest valley in Ladakh.

At once a rugged tourist destination and spectacular look into Buddhist history and culture, Ladakh is a region of India not to be missed.
