Faroe Islands Encourage Responsible Tourism with New Campaign

Visit Faroe Islands encourages visitors to embrace low-impact tourism supporting local communities and landscapes via a new campaign dubbed Please Visit Responsibly. The campaign isn’t asking all that much of visitors — just small, simple actions that can really, ultimately, make a difference, so long as everyone does their part.

For example, stay on marked paths. While hiking, keep the noise down. Give wildlife the space it needs. See some rubbish while hiking? Pick it up. Be friendly to locals and support local businesses.

“Tourism brings many positive opportunities to the Faroe Islands, but like destinations around the world, we also recognize the importance of protecting our landscapes, respecting local communities and encouraging positive visitor behavior,” said Jóhan Pauli Helgason, development manager,Visit Faroe Islands. “Please Visit Responsibly is about creating awareness in a warm, welcoming and relatable way. We are trusting our visitors with our home, asking them to experience it with care, curiosity, respect and to do the right thing.”

If you’ve yet to visit the Faroe Islands, you’ll need to take a connecting flight from the United States. You can connect from Iceland, Edinburgh and London. Once there, you’ll be able to enjoy the archipelago’s 18 islands and unique ratio of 55,000 people to approximately 80,000 sheep.
