When travelers think of The Bahamas, Nassau or Exuma probably come to mind. But have you heard of Inagua? For those looking for a hidden paradise in The Bahamas, Inagua has it all. The southernmost Bahamian island consists of Great Inagua and Little Inagua, both made up of mostly protected national parks and unique ecological destinations.

Inagua was responsible for helping the endangered species of West Indian Flamingos grow into a rehabilitated and full population. Now, flamingos are the national bird of The Bahamas and hold a place of honor on the country’s coat of arms.

Right now, The Bahamas is experiencing peak flamingo season, making it the perfect time to visit the destination. Bird watching is one of the most popular activities on the island because of the more than 80,000 flamingos and 140 species of native and migratory birds that call it home. The wetland sites provide the perfect nesting ground for West Indian Flamingos.

As the largest uninhabited island in the wider Caribbean, it is only accessible by boat. The island is a sanctuary for marine life and offers travelers an exclusive chance to get up close to unique animals living on the island, like green and hawksbill turtles.

For those looking for an even more unique experience, Great Inagua is also home to a research station for endangered, rare and unique species. Visitors can meet several animal species discovered in 1949, all still unique to the island. There is also a herd of wild goats that are descendants of livestock left behind by explorers years ago.

No trip to the island is complete without Great Inagua Lighthouse. The 150-year-old lighthouse is one of only three kerosene-burning lighthouses in The Bahamas. After the climb to the top, expect breathtaking panoramic views of the islands.
