Mahabodhi Temple is the holiest Buddhist site, known as the spot where Buddha attained enlightenment. Now a UNESCO World Heritage site, the pipal tree on the grounds is said to descend from the tree under which Buddha meditated after his enlightenment. © Tinnaporn Sathapornnanont | Dreamstime.com

Tips / Other

Let’s be honest, not everyone can afford a full day of spa treatments at a luxurious resort. If you want to practice self-care and you’re on a budget, there are still plenty of ways to take care of yourself without spending a penny. Follow our suggestions for the best free ways to practice self-care.

Exercise

Let those endorphins do their job! Go for a run, follow a free yoga video on YouTube, stretch —do whatever physical activity makes you feel your best.

Cook

Look through some recipes and find a full, healthy meal to try your hand at cooking. It can be something simple you’ll want to add to your regular rotation, or a more elaborate dish you can use to impress guests.

Clean

Pick a small cleaning project that will make you feel more at ease. Go through the pile of mail sitting on your table, change your sheets, clean out the refrigerator.

Unplug

Set your phone to “do not disturb” mode, turn off your laptop and television and take a break from the outside world for a bit to help clear your mind. Read a book, take a bath, go for a walk, take a nap, try meditating — be mindful and enjoy your surroundings.

Talk to a Friend

Plan a phone date with a friend you haven’t spoken to in awhile. Skype or FaceTime if you can, so you’ll feel like you’re close even if you’re miles apart.
