Channel your own Jurassic Park-inspired dreams with a remarkable experience in Mongolia alongside a paleontologist hunting dinosaur fossils. New Scientist Discovery Tours invites the curious and adventurous to embark on this new, eight-day trip, where travelers will venture into the expanse of the Gobi Desert, one of the world’s most renowned paleontologist sites.
Led by Dr. David Hone, a paleontologist and author specializing in the behavior and ecology of dinosaurs and their flying predecessors, this journey covers the Flaming Cliffs, the site where the first-ever dinosaur eggs were discovered in 1922; excavations of fossilized remains ranging from towering theopods to large carnivorous dinosaurs to smaller bird-like species; and exploration of the spiritual heart of Mongolia at Gandan Monastery, the country’s leading center of Buddhism.
On this tour, travelers will also discover Mongolia’s rich cultural and scientific heritage with guided tours of top institutions and museums like Mongolian Institute of Palaeontology, Zanabazar Fine Arts and Chinggis Khan Museum. A performance with traditional Mongolian dancers and khoomei (throat singers) will also take place during the trip.
Other highlights include exploring Ulaanbaatar, the country’s capital; venturing to Dalanzadgad, the gateway to the Gobi Desert where mountains, sand dunes and fossil beds await; heading into Nemegt Mountains; and going to Dragon Tomb, one of the Gobi Desert’s vast and rich fossil beds where some of the best discoveries of large carnivorous dinosaurs have been recently made.
