Bringing the grandparents on vacation was once a novelty trip reserved for momentous occasions like a trip to Disney World or a family reunion. Today’s grandparent travel trends are all about leaving the parents at home and taking the grandkids on a gramping or skip-gen (skip-a-generation) trip.
Everybody wins on a gramping vacation with parents left to savor some quiet moments, grandparents to bond with their beloved littles, and grandchildren left to delight in the undivided attention of their elders. Grandparents are also reporting getting more active on their skip-gen trips from playing basketball to frolicking on the beach.
Just how many grandparents are getting in on the new gramping trip trend? According to a survey by AARP, 32 percent of grandparents have already taken their grandkids on a skip-generation trip, and another 15 percent of Boomers plan to give it a go. The other good news for parents is 76 percent of grandparents will pay for most, if not all, of the gramping trip themselves. Whether parents can’t afford or stomach that trip to the theme park or the family-friendly cruise, a gramping adventure is a perfect way for grandparents and little ones to enjoy a new experience.
Travel organizations are also taking notice of the trend and are offering trips designed with grandparents in mind. The not-for-profit Road Scholar offers educational adventures geared toward older adults. Tours include educational, action-packed activities that feel like a thrilling field trip in places like Hawai’i and Peru.
As more travelers look for experiential trips packed with meaningful moments, skip-gen trips are unlikely to fade away anytime soon.
