Improvisation can be an incredible pastime and form of entertainment for live performances. The performance style also translates to podcasts, as it turns out.
The podcast that opened my eyes to improv, Hello From the Magic Tavern, is a comedy show that takes place on the magical world of Foon. One of the hosts, Arnie, falls through a dimensional rift behind a Chicago Burger King, but somehow maintains a weak WiFi signal. The result is a hilarious weekly show where the characters, including a shape-shifting badger and a wizard, talk about life on Foon. There are nearly 200 episodes of this one now, but the show is very much worth listening to from the beginning.
Not too long ago, Adal Rifai, who plays Chunt on Hello From the Magic Tavern, spun out with his own crew to start a podcast all about riddles and puzzles, Hey Riddle Riddle. The three hosts come together to solve riddles they and the audience source. The trio brings on special guests frequently, keeping the group dynamic from getting stale. The improv really comes to the table when the gang performs improv scenes based on the riddles. The result is often laugh out loud.
Mission to Zyxx is similar to Hello due to its genre-saturated nature. Instead of a fantastical world of magic, Zyxx takes place in the world of science fiction. The improv is well-done and a worthwhile listen for fans of improv comedy and science fiction alike.
