Celebrating the holidays can be lonely and not an event you’re anticipating. For some it means remembering the loss of friends and family that used to make the holidays filled with merry and joy. For others, the holidays are spent alone because of a circumstance. For instance, many study abroad students spent their holidays alone, away from family due to the cost it takes to go back home and then return to the host country. Fortunately, there are many ways to enjoy the holidays alone.
One of the easiest ways to spend a holiday alone is to plan a trip or create a list of activities to do during that time. It’s easy to get depressed and remember you’re spending the holidays alone when you spend days at home by yourself. No matter what, still get out into the world and do exciting things. Think of it as treating yourself during this time and indulge in situations you know will bring happiness to your life.
Even if you’re celebrating alone, you can still reach out and call friends and family so they can be with you in spirit. Let them know if you’re feeling down or lonely and let their words of comfort guide you through the holidays. It also helps to make new, solo traditions — special things you do with yourself. Whether you’re alone or not, you can do these traditions each year as a way to celebrate.
