Choosing a small lake to stay on, like Lake Waneta, guarantees a quiet experience tucked away in the backroads and woodsy regions. For those looking to be near all the action, choose a larger lake, like Cayuga, Seneca or even Keuka, for easy access to the surrounding wine trails.
Check out house rentals through Airbnb, VRBO and Home Away, but be sure to consult the map. Knowing your distance from the local town, hiking trails, grocery stores and anything else you might need will come in handy before booking.
How to Get Around
Most visitors to the Finger Lakes have a car with them, either as a local driving there or a traveler renting one. Having a car is a must, but for those who want to explore the local wineries, book a taxi or limo service beforehand — this may seem excessive and extravagant, but each lake has a different local taxi-cab service and can take 20–30 minutes to pick you up, seriously cutting down your time between wineries before closing time.
Rideshares such as Lyft and Uber are essentially non-existent so book a hired car and save yourself the trouble.
