When looking for a two-night stay in Dublin, the Hilton Dublin property seemed to fit my needs. The property is right across from Dublin’s Grand Canal and within walking distance of several streets known for an abundance of restaurants and bars.

When I arrived at the hotel on a Friday late afternoon, I found it pretty empty, with no wait to check in. At check-in, my husband and I were asked if we were planning to stay in or go out that evening, as there would be a hotel function lasting until around 10 p.m. and there could be some noise. We said that was perfectly fine, though I’m not sure it would’ve made any difference if it was, in fact, not fine. (The event did end up producing quite a lot of noise, though, audible from our fourth-floor guestroom.)

I had a king guestroom, very spacious, with a work space, seating area, table and view of the other side of the building. The bathroom was large as well, with a huge vanity. The only real issue with the guestroom was the lack of lighting. A few bedside lamps created a dim atmosphere and, if you wanted it any brighter, you were forced to open all the curtains, not ideal if you wanted to dress in full light.

Over the course of the weekend, it seemed several other events were held at the hotel, leading to more noise, but that wasn’t much of a bother unless you were trying to sleep.

Probably the best part of the hotel was, somewhat surprisingly, the on-site dining. In fact, for one meal, my husband and I canceled a reservation elsewhere and ate at the property. The Charlemont Bar & Bistro served well-made cocktails most of the day and hosted live music at night. The bar’s upscale feel and the type of live music (think low-key pop melodies accompanied by a piano) made it a more desirable alternative to some of the more party-driven restaurants and bars within walking distance of the hotel. The dinner menu was attractive, too, with many gluten-free and vegan options.

For its location and convenient on-site dining, I would stay at the Hilton Dublin again — but I might just ask if there were any events occurring that weekend first and possibly book another room type with better lighting options.
