The United States is home to many bars, as vital to the nation’s history as other iconic buildings. Add these places to your list for a side of history with your libations.

 

Lafitte’s Blacksmith Shop Bar 

The oldest bar in New Orleans, Lafitte’s Blacksmith Shop Bar is located in the French Quarter. New Orleans is a haunted city and this bar is no exception. Visitors recount seeing specters, including Jean Lafitte himself.

 

McSorley’s Old Ale House 

Opened in 1854, McSorley’s is the oldest continually operated bar in New York City. Originally created as a men’s only establishment, the bar allowed women in 1970.

 

McGillin’s Olde Ale House 

McGillin’s opened in 1860, making it the oldest continually operating bar in Philadelphia. The bar celebrated its 150th anniversary in 2010.

 

My Brother’s Bar 

The oldest bar in Denver, My Brother’s Bar has hosted famous patrons including Jack Kerouac. Opened in 1873, the name has changed several times, but the current name has held since 1970.

 

Sloppy Joe’s 

Opened in 1933, the Key West bar was frequented by Ernest Hemingway. The bar hosts an annual Ernest Hemingway look-alike contest, celebrating its 39th year in 2019.
