The beautiful Cathedral of Saint Peter and Paul was opened in 1864, constructed during a period of significant strife in Philadelphia between Roman Catholics and Protestants. Today it’s the principal church of the diocese, the largest brownstone structure in Philadelphia and the largest Catholic church in Pennsylvania.

Destinations / North America

The United States is home to many beautiful churches and cathedrals. Some of these date back to the beginning of the country and offer historical significance. Regardless of your religious beliefs, visit these places of worship to learn more about the history of the United States.

St. Louis Cathedral, New Orleans

The cathedral in New Orleans is the oldest in the United States. The historic landmark located in the heart of the French Quarter holds daily mass.

Trinity Church, New York City

While St. Patrick’s Cathedral is perhaps more recognizable, Trinity Church holds equal historical significance. Built in the Gothic Revival style, the church opened its doors in 1846. It is the final resting place of notable figures including Alexander Hamilton and William Bradford.

Jamestown Church, Jamestown, Virginia

The colonists who first came to North America built the original Jamestown Church in 1607. After several rebuilds, due to fire and other damage, the building was reconstructed in 1907. The original tower, built in the late 1600s, still stands today.

San Fernando Cathedral, San Antonio, Texas

San Fernando Cathedral is the oldest cathedral in Texas. It played an integral role in the Battle of the Alamo, wherein the Mexican general raised a flag from the church’s tower to mark the beginning of the siege.
